Architecture & The Media

14 – 15 May 2018
Architecture & Media is an international event organized by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe dedicated to learning about and exchanging experiences on the dissemination of architecture. During the conference, StoryData presented the project BigData Analysis on Architectura in the Media.

Does the media talk about architecture? Yes, and what do they talk about? The Internet increasingly offers us an open world of data. Yes, also about architecture. The Fundació Mies van der Rohe has counted on Storydata to learn more about how architecture is treated in the media as speakers at the 1st Architecture and the Media Congress .

From this starting point, at Storydata we set ourselves two challenges: On the one hand, to get to know journalists specializing in architecture and their readers and, on the other hand, what predominates in the media regarding this area.

During the closing conference of the architecture we announced the results of two processes of data collection, reuse and visualization.

First, we introduced ourselves as Storydata to explain our birth as a collective of female journalists seeking the stories hidden in data. A short but intense journey to exemplify the need for journalism that is currently focused on the speed and superficiality of the dizzying current events.

Then, to break the ice, we connected with the attendees by proposing a game. A series of questions with participation via mobile and live to present the results of the more than 100 surveys received from architects and readers interested in architecture. With prize included! A copy of the Atlas of Contemporary Architecture.

The mini gamification session shed light on what interests consumers of architecture news the most, the number of topics they read or which topics are most successful.

Next, the highlight of the presentation. The quantitative, qualitative and semantic analysis of the presence of architecture in the media. As a basis, we delved into the press collections publicly posted by the Consejo Superior de Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE).

A presentation that you can consult here and in which you can navigate through various visualizations of the data from different points of view: rankings of the media that have covered architecture the most in their spaces, the categories with the highest presence rate, the names of the most cited architects or the most used words.

The attendees showed great interest in the origin of the sample and, during the debate following the presentation, highlighted some of the facts that had surprised them most from the results presented. About the choice of the sample, about the need to delve deeper into the story presented by the data, about notable absences in some of the lists. From Storydata we highlighted the desire to offer results based on a public collection of free access but categorized and analyzed with the desire to obtain an idea of the presence of architecture in the state media.

Do you want to know which media outlet has talked about architecture the most in recent years? What words appear most often in articles dealing with this discipline? How are the more than 4,000 news items analyzed divided by category? How many women architects are on the list of the 15 most cited?

We invite you to browse this new work by Storydata !
